On 29 November I had the pleasure of meeting Rosendo Gómez, the exceptionally talented lead guitarist on the current Chico & The Gypsies tour. His playing blends Camargue rumba, traditional flamenco, and the distinctive Gipsy Kings–style guitar sound that has influenced generations of musicians.
Many fans don’t realise that Chico Bouchikhi was one of the original members and co-founders of the Gipsy Kings, the group that brought rumba flamenca to international fame in the 1980s and 1990s. Several musicians performing with Chico & The Gypsies today share that same heritage. This direct lineage keeps the band’s sound authentic — the true Camargue and Gitano spirit carried forward by artists who lived its origins from the very beginning.
Rosendo’s musical journey is remarkable: beginning guitar at age seven at the Marignane Conservatory, performing his first gig at Chico’s Patio de Camargue at thirteen, touring internationally across Russia, Argentina, and beyond, and later performing with Alabina before joining Chico & The Gypsies.
Speaking with Rosendo after the concert was a real highlight. His passion, humility, and dedication to the Gypsy rumba tradition are inspiring — a brilliant musician and an all-round warm, genuine guy. Moments like this remind me why I love teaching and performing classical and flamenco guitar here in Jersey: connecting with musicians who live and breathe their art.
If you’re a fan of Chico & The Gypsies, the Gipsy Kings sound, or the rich tradition of rumba flamenca, Rosendo Gómez is a guitarist you should definitely explore.
